Glencoe Scotland

The network for everyone with an interest in Scotland's most famous glen

Greetings all

The site now has a fairly substantial membership and there's quite a bit going on already. However, the big question is what do you want from the Glencoe Network site?

Being a network, the site is all about user generated content. But perhaps there's a bit more that those of us who live and work in Glencoe can do to add to the value of the site. A small group will be meeting next week and chances are this subject will come up for discussion.

So tell us. More information for visitors? Help with finding accommodation? Get rid of those Google ads? More events? More editorial content? Nothing at all?

Can't promise that your wishes will be met but we'd love to hear what you think.

Cheers

Ed - how about adding some Historical content?

I don't really know how this would work!
Could there be a page added (rather than just a discussion started) where people from all over could post Historical Information? ( Tapping all that knowledge that Alastair & Ros Macdonald and Archie Kennedy and many others have tucked away in their heads). Questions like the ones you often see in the Oban Times and the Scots Magazine trying to trace ancestors as an example
The story of the Communion Chalice in St Mary's Church, Glencoe, used by the Glencoe Macdonalds before they went of to fight at Cullodon. Still in use today. I have never seen this story written down anywhere but George Grant knows all about it. This is just one story of many out there I am sure.

How about a page where you can post your story about the exictement of your latest climb? You must hear so many of those stories at the bar in Clachaig! Folks are usually bursting to tell. Let them write it down, and share it through our pages, with the wider community.

This Glen has a lot of history passed down from mouth to mouth and alot of modern day stories that would make interesting reading. After all thats what Hamish did when writing his books about climbing adventures in the Glen.

Just a couple of ideas to get the ball rolling.

Look forward to seeing you all - 13 so far I believe - here at Torren on the 9th Sept..

Good for you Ed for putting your hand up - or was your arm twisted? - to be our Chairman. This is a great little orginasation and I am sure will go from strength to strength with the help of your "techy" expertees.

All the best

a forum where we all can chat and put our experiences would be good but it needs everyone to make an effort and post snippets no matter how short. it always is left to someone else to do so everyone needs to get involved as we have been given a great site.
i would love to see the chalice the macdonalds drunk from before going to culloden and although i have been in the church many times never knew any of that, take care everyone and hope to hear from you phil foxd

Evening folks

I like the local history and information idea for adding onto the site. But - I personally use websites like this for two reasons:

1) To get a flavour of an area and see what local 'colour' or character there is.
2) To get specific information and answers to questions.

So, for me, the local history would answer the first of my points, and some climbing tales (well walking, cycling or scrambling) may answer the second, as long as they were relevant and had a point. It would also be good to see more discussion before/after events - who's going, who went etc. and how was it? I guess this may stem naturally if the community is active and keeps growing.

Anyway, that's my tuppence worth as usual, see you all shortly :)

Keith
